How does Accentrate® compare to Equazen® Pro?
What is Accentrate® and what is Equazen® Pro?
Accentrate® is a dietary supplement that has been specifically formulated with clinically proven nutrients to support attention, focus, and emotional balance. It contains the omega-3 fatty EPA and DHA in phospholipid form, which is the form they are actually functional in the brain. Accentrate® also provides cofactors to support normal regulation of the neurotransmitters dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. Accentrate® is dosed for individuals under 110lbs and Accentrate110® is dosed for individuals over 110lbs.
Equazen® Pro is a medical food containing a combination of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids designed to address differences in omega fatty acid metabolism. Klaire Labs, the marketers of Equazen® Pro in the United States, show that it is backed by clinical studies. Various studies have shown that supplementation of omega-3s supports attention, memory, and mood. And Equazen® Pro does provide a good ratio of EPA to DHA, which are provided in triglyceride form from fish oil.
Comparison Chart
How is Accentrate® different from Equazen® Pro?
1. Accentrate® has been formulated with EPA and DHA in phospholipid form. Equazen® Pro provides EPA and DHA in triglyceride form from fish oil.
Omega-3 fatty acids exist in the body in three forms generally: the triglyceride form, the free fatty acid form, and the phospholipid form. The phospholipid form is the preferred carrier of omega-3 fatty acids to the brain because it is the form actually functional in the brain.
For a quick explanation, check out this 30 second video: Why Phospholipids?
The triglyceride form needs to be metabolized and then synthesized into a phospholipid before it can absorbed in the brain. One study showed that DHA from triglycerides, which is released as free DHA during digestion, was incorporated preferentially into adipose (fat) tissue, muscle tissue, and the heart, but not into the brain. In contrast, phospholipid DHA increased brain DHA by up to 100%, but had no effect on adipose tissue.[1]
Accentrate® doesn’t need high doses of EPA and DHA like fish oil supplements, because Accentrate® provides EPA and DHA in the form they are already in in the brain.
2. In addition to omega-3 fatty acids, Accentrate® provides neurotransmitter cofactors in the active form to support the proper regulation of dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine, while Equazen® Pro does not.
Accentrate® contains:
- the active form of folate in L-methylfolate
- the active form of Vitamin B12 in adenosylcobalamin and hydroxycobalmin
- the active form of Vitamin B6 in pyridoxal-5’-phosphate
- the active form of Vitamin B2 in riboflavin-5’-phosphate
- Vitamin D
- L-glutathione
- Astaxanthin
3. Accentrate®, while providing additional value with the neurotransmitter cofactors, is only $39.99/month (with a three-month subscription) while Equazen® Pro is $53.99/month.
4. Accentrate® has a product for children and adults. Equazen® Pro is dosed for kids.
When looking at Equazen® Pro, we were unable to find a product or other information that states dosage or use for teens or adults. Accentrate110® has the same ingredients as Accentrate®, but it is dosed for individuals over 110 lbs., such as teens and adults.
5. Accentrate® is marketed as a dietary supplement and Equazen® Pro is marketed as a medical food.
It is odd that Equazen® Pro, a fish oil supplement, is marketed as a medical food. A medical food is to be “administered under the supervision of a physician.” While Klaire Labs does market to medical practitioners and Equazen® Pro may be purchased through their website that states:
“Klaire Labs products are sold only through licensed healthcare professionals. To register and purchase products, you will need a Patient Authorization Code from a licensed healthcare professional. If you do not have this, please contact your provider.”
Equazen® Pro may also be purchased on Amazon…without the supervision of a physician. It is priced at $53.99/month, which is more expensive than comparable fish oil products. It is our guess that marketing Equazen® Pro as a medical food may help support having such an unnecessarily high price.
