Magnesium Supplementation
What happens when the brain is deprived of magnesium?
Magnesium is an important mineral that plays a role in hundreds of enzymes. It is essential to initiate hundreds of cellular activities and is required for ATP, which is what provides energy to the cell. More importantly, magnesium plays an important role in supporting normal brain health.
Not having enough magnesium impairs the brain’s ability to regulate important neurotransmitters. Magnesium deficiencies impair dopamine regulation as well as serotonin regulation and can contribute to:
- Impaired sleep
- Irritability
- Lack of focus
- Mood swings, and
- Fatigue
Since dopamine signaling is important for attention and is often disrupted in individuals dealing with lack of focus and emotional balance, nutritional deficiencies of magnesium can exacerbate it.
A common nutritional supplement in many integrative practices is supplementing with magnesium. There are many different forms of magnesium and some are more bioavailable than others. Magnesium salts like magnesium sulfide and magnesium oxide are poorly absorbed and oftentimes will cause gastrointestinal issues. Other forms such as chelated forms provide magnesium bonded to an amino acid and the body absorbs the amino acid and pulls the magnesium along for the ride.
MZI provides magnesium in chelated form and supports attention, focus, mood, and overall well-being.
